Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza

Greenville, NC

The Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza recognizes the thriving African American community that was displaced from this area. This area, known as their Town Common, housed the Sycamore Hill Baptist Church, which was a gathering place for the community. The memorial is situated at the footprint of the church, and inspires the stained glass approach, the seating which is reminiscent of church pews, and the large bell tower.

Completed as Project Executive, Graphics Director and Sr Graphic Designer with G&A Strategy & Design. Liza partnered with the architect, Perkins & Will, to develop the interpretive experience. The design team conducted community engagement sessions with residents of the historic Sycamore Hill neighborhood to understand goals, stories and locations that should shape the experience.
